Fez is one of the most popular starting points for a trip to the Sahara. The drive to Merzouga crosses the Middle Atlas mountains, cedar forests and the palm groves of the Ziz Valley before the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon.
The route at a glance
- Distance: about 470 km
- Driving time: around 7 to 8 hours, without long stops
- Main stops: Ifrane, Azrou, Midelt, Errachidia, Erfoud and Merzouga
Option 1: private 4×4 transfer (the easiest)
We organize private 4×4 transfers from Fez directly to the camp. It is the most comfortable way to travel: a local driver, a modern vehicle with air conditioning, and the freedom to stop wherever you like along the way — for photos in the cedar forest near Azrou, a coffee in Midelt or a view over the Ziz Valley.
Option 2: by bus
Buses connect Fez with Merzouga. The journey is long, so check the current timetables before you travel. When you arrive in Merzouga, we offer a complimentary pick-up to bring you to the camp.
Option 3: driving yourself
The road is paved all the way to Merzouga and easy to follow. If you drive, we have parking available at our designated meeting point, and from there we take you to the camp in the dunes. Leave Fez early in the morning to arrive before sunset.
Our tips
- Start early: arriving in the afternoon lets you enjoy the sunset over the dunes.
- Bring a warm layer: the Middle Atlas can be cold, even in spring.
- Plan at least one night in the desert — two if you can — to enjoy the camel trek, the stars and the sunrise.
