The journey from Marrakech to Merzouga is one of the most beautiful road trips in Morocco. You cross the High Atlas, pass kasbahs and palm groves, and follow the valleys of the south until you reach the dunes of Erg Chebbi.
The route at a glance
- Distance: about 560 km
- Driving time: around 9 to 10 hours without long stops
- Main stops: the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley, Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, Erfoud and Merzouga
Our recommendation: take two days
It is possible to drive from Marrakech to Merzouga in one long day, but the route is much more enjoyable in two. Spend the first night in the Dades Valley or near the Todra Gorge, and arrive in Merzouga on the second afternoon, in time for the sunset over the dunes.
Option 1: private 4×4 transfer
We organize private 4×4 transfers from Marrakech. With a local driver and a comfortable vehicle with air conditioning, you can stop at the viewpoints of the Tizi n’Tichka, visit kasbahs along the way and adapt the rhythm of the trip to you.
Option 2: by bus
There are buses from Marrakech to Merzouga, but it is a very long journey. Check the current timetables before you go. When you arrive in Merzouga, we offer a complimentary pick-up to the camp.
Option 3: driving yourself
The road is paved and well signposted, but the mountain pass requires care, especially in winter. If you drive, we have parking available at our meeting point in Merzouga.
Our tips
- Avoid driving the Tizi n’Tichka pass at night.
- Stay at least two nights in the desert: the journey is long, and the Sahara deserves time.
- Return via Fez if your trip continues north — it makes a perfect loop.
