Camel trekking and 4×4 tours are the two most popular ways to explore the Merzouga desert. They are very different experiences — and many of our guests end up doing both.
Camel trekking: slow, silent and traditional
For centuries, camels have been the traditional mode of transport in the Sahara. A camel trek lets you experience the desert just as the ancient nomads did: the slow, rhythmic sway of the camel, the silence of the dunes and the sunset turning the sand from gold to red.
- Best for: sunsets, sunrises, couples and anyone looking for calm
- Duration: 1 to 2 hours, overnight (16 to 18 hours) or several days
- From: €40 per person
4×4 tour: go further and see more
Unlike camel treks, a 4×4 tour allows you to reach the hidden gems of the desert: oases, fossil fields, nomadic families, the Gnawa music of Khamlia, the Black Desert and the seasonal lake of Dayet Srij.
- Best for: curious travelers, families and those with limited time
- Duration: half day (4 hours), full day (8 hours) or several days
- From: €60 per person
Our advice: combine them
Discover the region by 4×4 during the day, then ride a camel into the dunes at sunset and spend the night at the camp. It is the most complete way to experience the Sahara.
